You Told Me I Could So I Did (2023)

Words by Imhotep Blot

Inspired by Aaron Siskind’s Pleasures and Terrors of Levitation, where he photographed divers mid-air, hovering in a state of flux, You Told Me I Could So I Did  uses found sports imagery to explore time, space, and movement within the intersections of race and sports. In this series, the game of basketball is abstracted, turning the court into a blank canvas upon which Black bodies are suspended—not merely in mid-air, but in a liminal state of existence. It's an invitation to contemplate deeply: How do our bodies move through spaces defined by lines, limits, and dichotomies?
